There are several
different methods to get traffic from search engines. There are two
main categories, paid search traffic and organic search traffic.
Organic Search Traffic
Organic search traffic is
obtained when a Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL Search, or other search
engine user types in keywords then clicks on one of the search
results. This is why it is important to have meta tag titles and
descriptions that contain keywords, but also have a unique marketing
message that differentiates itself from the thousands of other
choices that appear to the search engine visitor.
Paid Search Traffic
Paid search traffic is
obtained by paying for clicks (PPC, keyword marketing). This is a
quick, more more expensive way to get traffic, compared to organic
search traffic. However, PPC costs on
Google and Yahoo are
usually less expensive than through other sources of advertising.
You can also get indirect
search engine traffic because a site that contains similar
keywords and content to your website is ranking well. The search
engine user clicks on the other website's link, then clicks to your
site from that web page, so you get the search engine traffic
indirectly.
Questions and Answers
1. How long does it take before I see traffic from search engines?
For paid search traffic, once you have approved your ads, it can
take less than 5 minutes before you see your first visitor via
search engine traffic.
2. Can I bid on my competitor's trademarks to get search engine
traffic?
Currently, the policy on Google is that you can bid on their
trademark name, but you cannot use their trademark in your ad copy.
This policy could change however, so be sure to read the latest
Google policy or consult your SEM professional.
3. How do I control my budget so that I can predict my costs for
search engine traffic?
Most search engines allow you to set a daily ad spend budget, and
you can place tracking conversion code on your shopping cart or
sign-up confirmation pages so you can get specific Cost Per
Acquisition (CPA) data so you can ramp up or slow down the search
engine traffic from specific keywords. Google and other search
engines want your advertising to be effective and provide excellent
tools so you divert your money from other sources that aren't as
cost effective.
