You can increase traffic
from search engines to your website through search engine
optimization best practices. There are many opinions on how this is
accomplished, but it boils down to content, inbound links,
popularity and properly using keywords throughout your website.
Most traffic from search
engines (80 - 90%) comes from the organic search results, not the
paid search results.
The best method is to
have a professional SEO analysis or an SEO site evaluation performed on
your website. You will receive a competitive SEO report and a
complete SEO action item list specific to your website. Once you
implement these changes, you should see an increase in organic
search traffic.
Search engines use
different algorithms to determine which sites rank for specific
keyword phrases. Most organic search traffic is accomplished by
proper use of content. The goal of the search engines is to bring
the best search results to their audience.
Now once you are getting
traffic from search engines, you want to convert that traffic into
your call to action... a purchase, sign-up, pageviews, etc. You also
want to reduce your bounce rate by testing different ideas on the
page such as better buttons, different size text, bigger fonts above
the fold, regular sized fonts with lots of text below the fold, etc.
It is important to convert that organic traffic into real customers.
Be sure to research
keywords, including competitive keywords. Search to see who is
ranking now and why ( reverse engineer organic search traffic ).
This will show some great ideas to get more organic search engine
traffic.

Questions and Answers
1. How long does it take before I see results when I optimize my
website for organic search traffic?
It varies from a few days to a few months. There are several factors
in SEO, including your website's crawl rate, competition for search
traffic, history, inbound links, etc.
2. What percentage of my traffic should be from organic search
results versus other sources?
If you don't have any paid search campaigns, 50% of your traffic
should be from organic searches. If you do have paid search
campaigns, then it depends on your monthly ad spend and how fast you
are trying to gain customers and gain market share.
3. I've been told that the keyword meta tag does matter for
search engine optimization. Is this true?
Keywords in your keyword meta tag DOES help. It won't make up for
poor SEO, but it will help tip the scales in your favor if
everything else is equal. However, putting keywords in your meta tag
keyword that are not in your user viewable content as text, WILL
harm your SEO. Also, check out the sites that rank near the top of
your industry's keywords. You will see that most websites DO use the
meta tag keyword. Also, investigate the big brand name websites. 99
out of 100 do use the keyword meta tag.
4. What is the difference
between paid search traffic and organic search traffic?
Paid search traffic comes from Google Adwords, Yahoo Search,
Bing.com's Microsoft AdCenter, etc. and you pay per click (sponsored
links). Google Adword's paid placement option allows you to choose
CPC or CPM. Organic search is free or nonpaid traffic. Google
Analytics will show you which keywords are paid and nonpaid so you
can see exactly which keywords are performing.
